The Mass Function of NGC 288
We present NICMOS NIC3 observations of the Galactic globular cluster NGC288, taken South East at 2.4 times the cluster’s half-light radius in the J and H bands. We have detected the cluster main sequence down to J ≃ 25 and H ≃ 24. The corresponding luminosity function covers the range 3 < MH < 9 and peaks at MH ≃ 6.8. The theoretical tracks of Baraffe et al. (1997) at [Fe/H ] = −1.3 give a mass...
متن کاملTelescope Study of the Globular Cluster Ngc 288
We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster NGC 288. We detect four X-ray sources within the core radius and seven additional sources within the half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of LX = 7×1030 ergs s−1 (assuming cluster membership) in the 0.3–7 keV band. We also observed the cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and...
متن کاملAge as the Second Parameter in Ngc 288/ngc 362? Ii. the Horizontal Branch Revisited
We revisit the “second parameter” pair of globular clusters NGC 288/NGC 362 on the basis of theoretical models for red giant branch (RGB) and horizontal branch (HB) stars. The results of the most extensive set of RGB/HB simulations computed so far for these clusters are presented for two different metallicities. Using several different analytical mass loss formulae for RGB stars, we derive rela...
متن کاملDark matter in early – type galaxies : dynamical modelling of IC 1459 , IC 3370 , NGC 3379 and NGC 4105
We analyse long–slit spectra of four early–type galaxies which extend from ∼ 1 to ∼ 3 effective radii: IC 1459, IC 3370, NGC 3379 and NGC 4105. We have extracted the full line–of–sight velocity distribution (in the case of NGC 3379 we also used data from the literature) which we model using the two–integral approach. Using two–integral modelling we find no strong evidence for dark haloes, but t...
متن کاملSAURON dynamical modeling of NGC 2974
NGC 2974 is a nearby field elliptical galaxy classified as E4 with detected HI and Hα gas apparently distributed in a disk (Kim et al. 1988; Buson et al. 1993). An earlier study by Cinzano & van der Marel (1994) suggested the galaxy harbors an embedded stellar disk not visible in the photometry. The galaxy was observed with the integral-field spectrograph SAURON (Bacon et al. 2001) mounted on t...
